Do you know the most expensive cap in the world? We show you 8 fun facts about caps

EmbroideryManufactory the blog

Whether baseball cap, trucker cap or snapback - we all wear and love them. But what do we actually know about the most popular of all headwear? Surprisingly little. Reason enough to shed some light on the subject. We have compiled some interesting fun facts and myths about the cap for you.

1. myth: cap enthusiasts are more prone to baldness

You're sitting at the dining table with your cap on your head. Yes, sure, it's rude, but a real cap enthusiast takes it off to sleep or shower, if at all. Grandma speaks up: "Why don't you take off your cap, it makes you bald!". I'm sure many of you have experienced this or something similar. But is it true? We say no! To actually cause hair loss, the cap has to be so tight that it pulls your hair out. And let's be honest: who does that to themselves voluntarily?

Fun Fact: Cooler head thanks to salad

Do you sweat under your cap when you play sports? No problem, says US baseball legend Babe Ruth. His trick: During the game, Ruth - incidentally one of the first athletes to wear headgear with a visor - put a wet cabbage leaf under his cap. No joke! And it gets better: rumour has it that he changed the cabbage leaf every two innings. Well, better cabbage on the head than on the plate.

3. worth knowing: the first baseball cap

Where does the baseball cap get its name? At least we can't completely rule out the possibility that it goes back to the US sport of the same name. According to tradition, the Brooklyn Excelsiors were the first team in 1860 to wear baseball caps as we know and love them today. But the sport is much older than the cap. This leads us to the question: What did baseball players cover their heads with before? Quite simple: either a straw hat, or simply nothing at all.

4. curious: the sticker remains on the cap

Which team do you belong to? Sticker or no sticker on the cap? And more importantly, where does it come from that it is almost compulsory to leave the sticker on in this country? There is no rational explanation for this. Just imagine the irritated looks when the label dangles out of the back of your jeans on the little plastic string. Nobody does that, do they? So we can only speculate where this strange trend comes from. Maybe it's to enhance the authenticity of the cap.
prove. Or because someone forgot to remove the sticker at some point and started a trend. Or because many shops only allow an exchange if the sticker is still on the cap. Either way, leave the sticker on - simply because that's the way it should be.

5. curious: the mega cap collection

You call yourselves cap collectors? We're not quite sure if you really deserve to wear that title. At least not in relation to a woman in Hamburg, New York State, who goes by the nickname "Hat Lady". According to a report in Vice magazine in February 2018, Gladys Ball, then 82 years old, hoards in her garages - yes that's right, plural - around 30,000 baseball caps that she bought over decades from a nearby New Era brand factory. Her reasoning: "I just like hats." So roughly: "I just like caps."
We did the math: If she wore each of her caps for at least one day of her life, it would take her about 82 years. So if she had started on the day she was born, she would be through by now.

6. madness: the most expensive cap

What will it be: a brand new Honda motorbike or a Honda Cap? Stupid question. But both - an NC750X or a Honda Collection's Big Wing Hat Cap - are available for the same price. Around 7,800 euros. This puts the Japanese car and motorbike manufacturer's cap in ninth place on the list of the 10 most expensive headwear items published by the online magazine therichest.com.

Of course, this raises a few questions. The most important one - what kind of lunatic would spend such an amount on a cap that doesn't even look particularly original? - we unfortunately don't have the answer. Next question: What makes this cap so special? Material and production! The cap's basic materials are plastic and PVC, and the fabric is breathable. On top of that, the manufacturing process is sustainable and environmentally friendly. A good thing - and definitely more environmentally friendly than a motorbike.

By the way, the papal tiara is the most expensive headgear. Its value is put at around 10 million dollars, or about 8.9 million euros.

7. the most popular baseball cap

Which baseball cap is the most popular? To answer this question, we don't have to dig too deep. All it takes is a look in the closet of any cap enthusiast, in the bestseller list on Amazon or in the Google image search under the search term "most popular baseball cap" - there we find it, the baseball cap from New Era with the logo of the NY Yankees. It now has legend status. The collaboration between New Era and the professional baseball league MLB began in the 1920s. In 1992, the brand provided the game cap for each individual team. The real triumph of the Yankees cap began four years later. Until then, the caps had only been produced in the respective team colours. In 1996, however, film director
Spike Lee approached New Era with the wish for a personalised Yankees cap. From that moment on, the Yankees cap became increasingly fashionable - and the rest is history.

8. the ugliest baseball cap

As we all know, taste is a matter of debate - which makes it all the more difficult to make a universal choice for the ugliest baseball cap of all time. Vintage Detroit, a US online shop for sports merchandising, has taken this step. The prize for the ugliest cap in the history of baseball goes to: The cap worn by the Detroit Tigers at their away games between 1994 and 1997.
Truly not a beautiful specimen. But you can always do worse - can't you?
