Wear cap correctly

Nowadays, a cap goes with you wherever you go. Whether for sport, leisure or occasionally at work - the cap is accepted in almost all areas of life. But not every cap is suitable for every person and every occasion. We have a few styling tips for you and show you what else you should look out for.

Where does the cap come from?

The cap originated in American baseball. They served as sun protection and their colour made it clear which team the players belonged to. Later, the Americans discovered the cap as a practical alternative to classic hats. It was not until the 1970s that the trend came to Germany. Rap stars discovered the cap as a cool statement for themselves. But it wasn't just young people who quickly took a liking to the cool headwear. Older men also realised how practical it is to cover light hair with a cap.

The correct position of the cap

How do you put on the cap correctly? There is often uncertainty about this question. Basically, you can wear the cap however you want. Fortunately, the position of your cap is not an expression of a social or political statement. However, depending on the shape of your head and your haircut, it is advantageous to follow a few styling rules.
If you wear the cap classically with the visor facing forwards, you have good sun protection. Put the cap loosely on your head. It should not sit too high so that your head doesn't look too long. If you want to wear the cap with the visor to the back, you should check in the mirror that your head does not look unnaturally large. Especially for outdoor activities where the sun shines strongly on the back of your neck, this is an advantage. Younger men in particular like to wear the cap sideways. Whether the visor points to the right or left is a matter of personal taste. But make sure that you angle the visor only slightly towards the ear and not at a 90-degree angle. This only looks good - if at all - on Will Smith in the series "The Prince of Bel-Air".

The different cap models

Whether your cap looks good in a certain position also depends on which model it is. Since caps differ in shape, we have some tips for you. Visually, caps look best when they do not completely cover the ears and there is not too much space between the ears and the cap. The cap should also not stick out to the side. This creates a mushroom look - and not for the classic, indeed iconic, Beetles version.

How to wear the fitted baseball cap

The classic "fitted" baseball cap is not adjustable in size. Therefore, you should check in the mirror whether it fits well before buying it. If the cap is too small, you won't be able to wear it properly because it will sit too high or pinch when worn for a long time.

How to wear the snapback

The snapback can be better adapted to the shape of your head, because it can be gradually adjusted in width at the back of the head thanks to the plastic fastener.

How to wear the strapback

Even more practical is the strapback, which can be continuously adjusted by clamping the strap at the back of the head with a metal fastener. Adjust the closure so that you can put the cap on properly and nothing presses. The fastener is an advantage for children because the cap "grows" with them.

How to wear the Flexfit Cap

Flexfit caps come without a fastener. Thanks to the elastic band, they fit perfectly to your head size.

How to wear the trucker cap

Trucker caps have a plastic grille at the back of the head for ventilation. The peak is usually shorter. Pull it further into your face for a stylish effect.

How to wear the 5-panel cap

The relatively new and currently trendy 5-panels also have a short peak. They are available with different closures, are flat and close-fitting.

Which cap for which occasion?

Those of you who don't leave home without headwear should buy a variety of caps so that you can wear a suitable model for different occasions. For sports and other leisure activities, you can wear any cap that suits your taste. While younger men like to wear colourful models, these tend to look rather inappropriate on older men. Breathable material with UV protection is advantageous for outdoor activities.
For professional and other occasions where you are required to wear a suit, you should forgo a cap as an exception. Unless you're the boss, in which case you can hopefully do what you want. For occasions where you shouldn't be dressed too casually but don't have to wear a suit, you can wear a discreet cap. Preferably one that doesn't have flashy sports team or company lettering on it. Bright colours are also inappropriate. The colour of the cap should always match the rest of your outfit. This makes it look high-quality and the whole outfit coherent. To be taken seriously, make sure you put the cap on correctly - ideally with the peak facing forwards.

Cap and headphones - is that possible?

Inconspicuous headphones that are plugged into the ears can be worn with the cap without any problems. You should avoid large headphones that are placed on the head. Otherwise the cap will be squashed and you will look like a toddler.

Wear a cap without destroying your hairstyle: Here's how

Caps go with any hairstyle. Keep in mind, however, that when you take off your cap, your hairstyle might look "flat". The best thing to do is to cut your hair bald. Joke. Alternatively, a comb can help. Women and girls can wear the cap on their open hair without any problems. Updos in combination with a cap, on the other hand, are rather difficult - unless you can live with the bump under the cap. A low plait or ponytail is much more elegant. Simply pull it through the gap in the cap - and you'll look particularly sporty. By the way, it's not just the hairstyle that's important for a good look, but also the hair colour. So that you
To avoid looking pale, the colour of the cap should also match your hair colour and skin type. Earthy tones suit warm skin types. Cooler shades are more suitable for cool types. Before buying, put on the cap and check in the mirror what effect it has on your face.

How do I care for my cap properly?

Of course, caps also absorb odours and sweat marks. Nevertheless, do not put your cap in the washing machine or dishwasher - this may deform the visor. To be on the safe side, wash your cap by hand. We explain how to do this in our guide "Washing and caring for your cap properly".
The bottom line:
Caps are practical everyday companions and stylish accessories at the same time. But not every cap suits every occasion, every head shape or every hair colour. Just try out what you like and what you feel comfortable with before you buy. Matching caps of all types - with embroidery - are also available in our shop .
