A colourless substance with fluorescent properties that acts like a dye on the fibre and transforms the invisible ultraviolet rays into visible blue rays, which then combine with the inherent yellowish colour of the fibre to form white for our eyes. The effect of the optical brighteners is strongly dependent on the proportion of ultraviolet rays in the light source.
